By Carter Brown

The proper care and maintenanceof your oriental rugs will keep them looking beautiful and last for years. A lot of people think it's best to leave the care of an oriental rug to the professionals who specialize in them and this is true but you can do a little care yourself to keep your rug looking beautiful while making it last a lot longer.

The main enemies of rugs include general wear and tear, moisture, grit, moths and insects. The following tips will help you care and maintain your rug by combating these elements and will give your rug a longer usable life. Many are simple and practical; some may require a small additional investment, while others are to be performed by professionals.

Oriental rugs must be rotated - If your rugs are in an area with a lot of traffic, you must rotate them often, at least once a year. Walking on them over and over in the same area will create a worn path of wear if it is'nt rotated regularly. This will insure even wear. It must be rotated if it is exposed to the sunrays which can fade the color.

Vacuum the Rug Often- Woven rugs tend to hold dirt and grime in its fibers. Dirt can abrade the fibers when pressed against them, mostly by passing feet, and ruin them. Remove dirt and grime by vacuuming the rug regularly but not too often as each vacuuming removes some of the rug fibers.

To find the direction of the pile of the rug, run your hand across and see which direction is the shiny side. Vacuum the front, then back, and again along the front of the pile.

Check often for insects - Carpet moths and beetles can attack your rug and distroy it before you even know they are there. To prevent this, check your rug on a regular schedule, underneath the rug and in the pile.

Have the professionals clean it - For a good thorough cleaning, take it to the professionals to clean it for you. This should be done every year or up to three, depending on the area it is used. Damage from dirt and dust vacuuming cannot remove will cause your rug to slowly deteriorate. Professional cleaning will remove this left-in and embedded dirt.

Store it Properly - If you need to store your rug, roll it up in paper and avoid plastic to wrap it in. The fibers of your rug need's to breathe and plastic will prevent this. If it is stored in plastic, moisture may be present and cause mold and mildew to grow. This will cause damage to your rug. Don't store your rug where it is damp or very warm, this is the perfect setting for mildew growth.

Water and Fire Will Damage Your Rug - If you have a fire or flood, clean them immediately. Professional cleaning is best. The water will cause your rug to mildew, so drying immediately is essential. Natural fibers or wool in the rug will be damaged by the acid in the soot. Cleaning immediately will prevent damage.

Accidental Spills- As soon as the spill occurs, clean the stain. If the spill is liquid, mop the spill with an absorbent cloth. Solid matter can be removed with a spatula or spoon. As soon as possible, have it cleaned.

The above tips can help with the maintenance and care of your rugs, making it easy to stay ahead of dirt, grim, moths and beetles, wear and fading of your rug. - 15252
