How To Clean An Oriental Rug

By Jute Whistler

Oriental rugs are a great way to add style to any room. An oriental rug can be purchased in different shapes, sizes and colors so you can match any room in the house. Oriental rugs can serve as the focal point of your room.

However, the plush pile of an oriental area rug can become dirty. As these rugs are expensive you will want to protect their quality by keeping them as clean as possible. Some owners choose to hang their rugs so that no one ever walks on them. Others place oriental rugs on their floors where they will have to be cleaned frequently.

To find out if your oriental rug is dirty simple place your hand firmly on the rug and press down. Move your hand back and fourth for about ten seconds. Then look at your hand. If your hand is dirty then it is time to clean the rug.

Oriental rugs can be vacuumed easily. Be sure to vacuum the rug where it lays so you can get the dirt from deep into the fibers. This may be the only step you need to take to make sure that your rug is completely clean. Make it a point to vacuum your rug one to two times each week, depending on the traffic.

After you have vacuumed your area rug it is time to beat the rug. Beating will remove ground in loose dirt that the vacuum cleaner missed. Hang your rug outdoors in an open area. Using a rug beater, beat the rug until no more dust or debris appears. You may want to wear a disposable mask during this part of the cleaning routine.

You will need to wash the rug after hanging it out and beating it. Washing your rug may seem like a long process but it will be cleaner and healthier if you do. You may want to choose a large area such as a deck or driveway that you can sweep off and clean before placing the rug down.

To begin the washing process you will first wet the rug with cool water. Test a small area of the rug to determine if it is colorfast by applying a small dab of your rug shampoo. Let the shampoo set for 10 minutes to make sure the shampoo is safe for cleaning your oriental rug.

Once you know that no fading has occurred you can begin to clean the entire rug. Use a bristled brush so you can scrub the shampoo all over the damp rug. Pay close attention to areas that are stained or marked with heavy debris. Brush along with the grain of the rug. Be sure that the shampoo goes all the way down to the nap of the rug.

To clean the fringed edges of the Oriental rug you need to use a wet brush and soapy water. Simply brush the fringes with the brush. This will loosen the dirt and debris. Don't brush toward the rug, but away.

Rinse the rug with cool water. Use a squeegee to remove excess water and then hang the rug up to dry. - 15252
