How to Recover from Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty

By Ashley Mcormaic

A nose job can consist of 2 different surgeries performed at the same time or just one of the other. Rhinoplasty refers to external nose and is used to change the outer nose to a different shape or size. Septoplasty deals with the internal nose and is used to change the structure of the nose from the inside. Out of all the cosmetic procedures Rhinoplasty has become most popular.

Rhinoplasty Recovery 101:

The surgeon that performs the operation should warn you that after the procedure you will experience both discomfort and bruising, the extent of which will depend on the type of nose job and how your body reacts. The nose will likely be broken during the course of the surgery; as such bruising and swelling will occur. Your doctor may either inform you of over the counter medication or prescribe something to ease the pain. The majority of the discolouration should disappear with in 3 weeks or so, if the nose was not broken it will fade much faster.

During the recovery process the middle and upper portion of the face will be very sensitive and will be noticeably swollen. The average recovery time for an open nose job takes approximately 1 " 6 months and closed averages 3 " 6 weeks. The plastic surgeon will give you guidelines in order to speed your recovery along. Obviously it is crucial to avoid any kind of pressure on the nose while it is healing.

You will likely be away from your normal routine, including you job for seven days. In order to keep the new shape of the nose packing will be placed in the nasal cavity for the first few days. It depends on the nature of your work as to whether or not you will be able to go back within the week. The nose tends to run with blood for a week or more after the surgery and the swelling/discoloration will depend on how quickly your body recovers.

When it comes to cosmetic surgery being realistic is important. The pain and swelling make it near impossible to see any kind of results after surgery. In fact most people have to wait several months before the final results can be seen. For some this happens faster because of less stress, over all health and again the bodies ability to heal. Expect anywhere from three to six months.

Good luck with your Cosmetic Nose Surgery. - 15252
